Almost everyone is nervous before their first class. Not because the workout is scary — because walking into a new gym where you don't know anyone feels like a lot. Here's the good news: it's far less intimidating than your brain is telling you, and knowing the flow ahead of time takes the edge off completely.
This is the play-by-play of a first group class at Plus2 in Edison — from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave. Read it once and you'll walk in knowing exactly what happens next.
Before you show up
Book your spot ahead of time instead of dropping in cold. Your first class is a $30 drop-in — reserving it guarantees your place and tells the coach a new face is coming so they can look out for you. Then keep the prep simple:
- Wear whatever you can move in — a t-shirt, shorts or leggings, and sneakers you don't mind sweating in. No special gear required.
- Bring a water bottle and a small towel. That's genuinely it. We've got the equipment.
- Eat light an hour or two before if you can — enough to have energy, not so much that you feel it during a warm-up.
- Arrive about 10 minutes early. That buffer is your friend on day one.
Walking in the door
Tell the coach it's your first time. Seriously — just say it. That one sentence changes your whole experience, because now the coach knows to check your form a little closer, explain movements instead of assuming, and make sure you're never guessing. Good coaches love a first-timer. It's the whole reason they do this.
You'll get a quick hello, a couple of questions about any injuries or things to work around, and a tour of where to put your stuff. No forms to agonize over, no sales pitch on the floor.
No judgement. Just progress. We mean it literally.
How the class actually runs
Plus2 group classes run Tuesday and Thursday at 7 PM, about an hour each, and move in a predictable arc:
- Warm-up (~10 min). The coach leads the whole group through movement to get your body ready. This is also when they quietly gauge how you move so they can scale things for you.
- The main work (~35–40 min). The strength and conditioning portion. The coach explains each movement, demos it, and walks the room correcting form. Everyone follows the same plan, but you'll get a version that fits your level — lighter weight, easier variation, whatever you need.
- Finisher & cool-down (~10 min). A short push to close it out, then stretching and a breather. This is when the room usually loosens up and people talk.
Nobody expects you to know the movements. Nobody's watching to judge you. Everyone in that room had a first day, and most of them remember being exactly where you are.
You cannot do it "wrong." The coach scales every movement to you. Your only job on day one is to show up, listen, and move at your own pace. That's the entire assignment.
The part nobody warns you about
You'll probably be a little sore a day or two later, especially if it's been a while. That's normal and it fades fast as your body adapts. Hydrate, move around the next day instead of sitting still, and know it means the session did its job. It is not a sign you overdid it or that you're "not ready."
"But I'm really out of shape"
That's not a reason to wait — it's the exact reason to come. Every coach at Plus2 has trained people starting from zero, coming back after years off, or nervous they'd be the least fit person in the room. You won't be judged and you won't be left behind. The session meets you where you are. (If you want the bigger picture on how our classes work, read our guide to small-group training in Edison.)
After class
Most first-timers walk out surprised by two things: how much easier it was to fit in than they expected, and how much better they feel. If you liked it, the coach can point you to the monthly package that fits how often you want to train. No pressure — just come back.
